The first in a series of four equine studies for an unrealised proposal for the corner of Coventry Street and Haymarket, near the Criterion Theatre, Piccadilly Circus, London.
These horses express energy and are derived stylistically from the heyday of equestrian sculpture; that is to say Graeco-Roman (e.g. the Horses of San Marco in Venice) and more importantly the Renaissance horses which followed… These horses do not follow the approved and disciplined paces of the riding school; they are in spite of their heavy weight, almost simian in their agility and expressiveness. These sculptures are intended as a relevant and thoroughly contemporary vision of horse sculpture.
