My head of Clovis was inspired by [Aimé-Jules] Dalou’s head of a baby and Dalou is one of the most profoundly Romantic sculptors I can think of. He influenced British sculpture enormously during his exile here as a result of his involvement with the Paris Commune of 1872, a political commitment typical of a Romantic sculptor.
