In 1968-69 I made a series of pieces with the generic title Gold Standard, of which this is an example. These represented a change in that they described volume physically. The individual components, however, were still relatively slender. A version of this piece made in Scotland produced a further change, probably in response to the new, physically more impressive environment of the Highlands. The work became heavier, stronger, larger, and, as a concomitant of this, I became less concerned with very high finishes.
